He is also a celebrated biographer, essayist and the author of books on contemporary conflict, military campaigns and political leadership. He is renowned for his numerous profiles of political leaders, including Hugo Chavez, Fidel Castro, Che Guevara and Augusto Pinochet.

2 p.m.: Ben Mauk is an award-winning journalist, writer and filmmaker based in Berlin. His first documentary film, “Reeducated”, is part of “Inside Xinjiang’s Prison State,” an immersive VR and interactive feature on life inside a Chinese reeducation camp. The project won The New Yorker its first-ever Emmy and Peabody awards and the film has screened at more than 30 festivals.

5 p.m.: Molly Crabapple is an acclaimed artist and writer. She co-authored “Brothers of the Gun”, a NY Times Notable Book, and penned the memoir “Drawing Blood”. Her reportage spans global issues, from Occupy Wall Street to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Her animated films have been nominated for three Emmys and won an Edward R. Murrow Award. As an award-winning animator, she has pioneered a new genre of live-illustrated journalism.

6:30 p.m.: Alia Malek is a journalist, author and former civil rights lawyer whose work has appeared in The New York Times, Foreign Policy, The NewYorker, the Nation, the Christian Science Monitor and other publications. In April 2011, Alia moved to Damascus, Syria and wrote anonymously for several outlets from inside the country as it began to disintegrate. She is the author of “The Home That Was Our Country” about the many places Syrians have gone (including Armenia), winning the Hiett Prize in the Humanities (2016).
